Dental Prosthetics
Fixed and Removable Prosthetics
What is Prosthetic Treatment?
If a tooth has undergone endodontic treatment (i.e., it is a „dead“ tooth) or if its hard dental tissues are too weakened by decay or trauma, we consider prosthetic treatment. There are several options for treating such teeth:
Onlay (Partial Crown)
An onlay replaces only the damaged hard dental tissues and the chewing surface. Think of it as a filling made under stable conditions in a laboratory that covers the chewing surface and ensures even transmission of chewing forces.
Crown
In cases of significant weakening of the tooth tissues or when an aesthetic solution is necessary, a crown is chosen. It surrounds the entire visible part of the tooth after it has been shaved down. Crowns can be made from different materials:
- Full Ceramic Crown: This is the gold standard of modern dentistry. It is a highly aesthetic and durable material suitable for the reconstruction of both anterior and posterior teeth. The exact type of ceramic material is selected by the dentist based on the needs of the treatment.
- Metal-Ceramic Crown: The best choice in specific cases. The metal core is fully covered with aesthetic ceramic.
- Composite or Plastic Crowns: These are used as temporary solutions.
Bridge
In cases of missing one or more teeth, a bridge can be considered, which is anchored to the adjacent teeth. An alternative to a bridge is replacing the missing tooth with an implant.
Removable Prosthetics
If there aren’t enough of the patient’s own teeth to anchor a bridge and they do not consider implants, the only option for replacing missing teeth is a removable denture. Prostheses can be:
- Partial: Replacing some teeth.
- Complete: Full dentures, also known as „removable teeth.“
